just spent 15 minutes typing up a bug report about suddenly getting 401s from Apple’s WeatherKit API (it’s happened to me multiple times in the past, usually only for a day or so, but their status page is always green) and then i realized…

my Apple Developer Program membership expired 🙃

so i guess the public URLs for Apple Maps Guides just encode the name and individual locations right in the URL… which means that every time i add places to my PDX Food guide, i have to re-share it. why is Apple like this.

weirdest #xoxofest experience:

thinking someone was leaning in for a hug (i thought maybe we’d met before and i forgot) when he was really just trying to tell me my fly was unzipped, then him stepping back and being like, “oh hey! you’re the guy on the horse! i love your whole online deal”

least favorite #xoxofest experience:

random dude mansplaining how important “marketability” is for software and offering unsolicited advice about how i should “only be building things for others, not yourself”

favorite #xoxofest experiences:

  • not being able to choose a favorite talk (ok maybe Erin Kissane’s and Ed Yong’s talks about COVID, and Molly White’s talk about online community and a better web)
  • (re)connecting with internet friends and so many people i admire
  • DELICIOUS BURGER

so incredibly surreal to think about how #xoxofest is over, and so incredibly happy about how many people i finally got to meet in person after years and years of interacting online. FOURTEEN YEARS in one case! how wild is that??? i just love this community. and i just know it’ll live on.
