i’ve been waiting for AGES to share this #xoxofest talk with people who weren’t there. i can’t tell you what it’s about without spoiling it. just watch it (but maybe skip the first minute or two, they follow a brief recap that isn’t included)

Cabel Sasser’s 2024 XOXO Talk

“Don’t waste this. Keep everyone guessing. Make me proud.” When Panic co-founder Cabel Sasser spoke at our second festival in 2013, the Mac software company had just started venturing into games by funding the studio behind Firewatch, an indie blockbuster that launched Panic’s games publishing business and, eventually, the Playdate handheld console. weirdest #xoxofest experience:

thinking someone was leaning in for a hug (i thought maybe we’d met before and i forgot) when he was really just trying to tell me my fly was unzipped, then him stepping back and being like, “oh hey! you’re the guy on the horse! i love your whole online deal”

least favorite #xoxofest experience:

random dude mansplaining how important “marketability” is for software and offering unsolicited advice about how i should “only be building things for others, not yourself”

favorite #xoxofest experiences:

  • not being able to choose a favorite talk (ok maybe Erin Kissane’s and Ed Yong’s talks about COVID, and Molly White’s talk about online community and a better web)
  • (re)connecting with internet friends and so many people i admire

so incredibly surreal to think about how #xoxofest is over, and so incredibly happy about how many people i finally got to meet in person after years and years of interacting online. FOURTEEN YEARS in one case! how wild is that??? i just love this community. and i just know it’ll live on.

i’ve had multiple people at #xoxofest tell me how much they like how i’ve built up my website and how they wish they could do something similar and… i think i’m actually feeling inspired to make that possible? i’ve been meaning to make the whole thing customizable and easier to run. is it time???

“I used to dream about working at Gawker. I used to dream about a job. I used to dream about labor. That’s wack. Don’t do that!” Gita Jackson spoke directly to my heart and soul #xoxofest
